The name "Chesterfield" refers to both the town of Chesterfield, home to about 3,500 residents, and the county of which it is the seat. Chesterfield is renowned for its courthouse – in fact, on many documents the area itself is referred to by that name – due to its great historic significance.

Chesterfield has been the site of several major events throughout early U.S. history. Famed figures who were critical to the fate of the young nation stopped here for a variety of purposes. In the many years since that time Chesterfield County has grown into a thriving community.
